Avira Online Essentials is a security platform for Avira users that can be accessed through a website or a Windows client. With Avira Online Essentials, users can manage any Avira product installed on their devices (PC, laptop, smartphone and tablet) and access all of Avira's different services, including Antivirus, Secure Backup, Anti-Theft and Pilot.
Monitor the protection of your PC, smartphone and tablet
The purpose of Avira Online Essentials is to centralize the control of Avira’s security services. If you use this software to protect your computer, your smartphone and your tablet, this online platform will give you a status update of all your devices from one single dashboard. You can add as many devices as you want to Avira Online Essentials, and it’s very easy to use.
On the Avira Online Essentials dashboard, you can access four different services.
The first is the Antivirus service, which displays the status of the antivirus protection installed on your PC, smartphone and tablet. The information displayed is basic: you can view the date of the last scans performed and check the activity reports. These are purely informative, and you can't adjust the settings of your antivirus from the dashboard.
Next, you can access the Secure Backup service, with 5 GB of free online storage for your personal files. This is installed separately and automatically synchronizes the folders of your choice.
The third service, Anti-Theft, is always connected to your mobile devices. It locates them on Google Maps and offers two very useful options if you lose them: Play Sound, which will make your device ring, and Lock Device, which in a worst case scenario, will remoltey lock your device.
Finally, Avira Online Essentials offers a remote support tool called Pilot. With this tool you can control a friend’s computer to help troubleshoot a computer glitch, install software or set up a printer. But this is not an integrated service and it takes you back to the LogMeIn Rescue console, which looks quite different from the Avira Online Essentials interface. You also need to install an extension for your browser.
Easy to set up
Avira Online Essentials is easy to set up and you should be able to add all of your devices in just a few minutes. The dashboard still seems quite bare in terms of functionality, but we like the cohesive interface across platforms, as well as its simplicity. Take into account that you must use your Avira username whenever you want to add a device or service, but all you need to create one is an e-mail address.
A monitoring service with few features
Avira Online Essentials presents itself as a tool to monitor and manage rather than as an autonomous security service. It will not replace any of your software and security apps, but will be useful if you have Avira products on multiple devices.
Avira Online Essentials, however, does not quite convince us, due to its lack of features and the fact that it doesn’t let you do much. Aside from the Anti-Theft and Secure Backup features that gives you access to your saved files from any web browser, the Antivirus settings are nowhere to be seen, and Pilot merely refers us to an external service. For the latter, we would have also liked a more integrated and convenient tool.
In addition, through Avira Online Essentials, you can't change any of the settings of the devices or the software; instead, you have to access their own interfaces. To sum up, Avira Online Essentials is a tool far from essential, unless you are a fan of computer security.
